8th Grade
Welcome to Ankeny Southview 8th Grade Girls Track!
Welcome to the Ankeny Hawkettes 8th Grade Girls track website! Track is a sport that will benefit all athletes of all ability levels and no previous track experience is necessary to participate!
There are a wide variety of events available so each athlete can find events suited to her strengths. There are both individual and relay events available at each of the distances. Running events for both sprinters and distance athletes range from the shortest race of 100 meters for sprinters all the way up to the longest race of 1500 meters (almost a mile) for distance girls. Many additional opportunities are available for athletes in hurdling events as well as the throwing (shot put and discus) and jumping (long jump and high jump) events.
8th grade track will provide numerous all-around benefits to the girls. Athletes will learn proper running form and improve their speed. They will also increase their overall strength, fitness and athleticism, and will benefit from the cross training that helps prevent overuse and repetition injuries. Most importantly, however, the athletes will be part of a successful and positive team environment that thrives on mutual respect and support of each athlete.
Track is a spring sport with practices beginning in March and meets beginning in early April and concluding in early May.
There will be approximately eight meets during the season, including some ‘A’ meets, some ‘B’ meets and some ‘A’/’B’ combination meets with the entire squad participating. We conclude the season with the 8th Grade Girls State Track Meet.
Conflicts with other activities can typically be worked out so that athletes can participate in each activity. We encourage our athletes to participate in multiple activities and understand that some athletes may need to have other activities as a priority. We still encourage these athletes to join us so they can also gain the overall benefits of track and field!
Check the other links on the site for more information about this season and previous seasons.
See you at the track!!
